Aroldis Chapman Chooses Cincinnati?

According to about 3 billion different sources, Aroldis Chapman has signed an apparent deal with the Cincinnati Reds for 5 years at $30 millions dollars.  The left hander has been hotly pursued by a lot of teams, namely Yankees and Red Sox.  Most thought the Reds had no real shot at Chapman.

Why are We Watching?

reds logo
Why follow the Reds someone asked me the other day…. I for some reason had to think about this for just a moment before I answered, but don’t worry it came to me.  “The Reds are my favorite team, always has been” I answered!  “WHY” I was asked in return.  More thinking on my part, “well when I was a little kid they were the Big Red Machine, and man they were the best, and when I was growing up I got to watch Pete Rose, Dave Parker, Eric Davis, Barry Larkin, Jose Rijo, and even saw a world series” I said with a smirk, I mean what’s better than that.  “You realize they haven’t even played in a world series since 1990 don’t you? That’s basically 20 years without much chance; they are no better than the Bengals have been.”  Ouch that hurt I thought, what do you say back to that?  “Well, your right, it’s been 20 years, and we have been pretty bad to a mild ok once in a while, but did you know that we have an awesome core of players that are not only going to rock the fantasy world, but are going to make us competitive year in and year out for a while, we have a very exciting GM, and an owner whom is willing to spend some money now, I think they are going to make you change the way you feel about the Cincinnati Reds!”  Now I was pretty excited about this response, I mean pretty great right? I got “so who are they, I know it’s not Griffey Jr. or Adam Dunn or Josh Hamilton, what were they thinking letting Dunn get away?”  “Wow good point,” I said “Dunn is a great hitter, who can and will do great things each year, but with the hitters we had coming up from the farm teams, I think it was best they let him go so that by the time we develop we aren’t behind the eight ball with salary, we may need to add something to our team when we need it most at some point, and paying Dunn to stay while we develop may have been detrimental, don’t get me wrong, I love Dunn and I honestly wish he was still here.  I watched him and Willy Mo Pena kill ball after ball at Fifth Third Field for the class A Dayton Dragons during batting practice and games, one of the most exciting things I have ever seen.  Like I said though we have a great core of guys up here, between Johnny Cueto’s live fastball, to the guy they traded Josh Hamilton for Edinson Volquez, you have Homer Bailey who really seems to be figuring it out, and may yet develop into the number 1 guy he seemed destined to be.   You got the always all star worthy (gonna hit .300 and 20+ home runs and steal 20+ bases) Brandon Phillips, future all stars and 30+ home runs in each Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, former all star who has a lot left and wants to be here Scott Rolen (someone with World Series experience that we needed)  You got the guys that not everyone thinks of in Jonny Gomes who can hit the ball a mile, and Laynce Nix that can do the same, I don’t see how anyone can’t think of Bronson Arroyo and not know how dangerous he and Aaron Harang can be, Harang had a rough couple years, but the guy can throw.”
